The late Pat Lipps, then Patsy Hicks, would have been in this 1948 Register-News photo of people on the podium when Harry Truman campanied here-if she hadn't given up her seat to Truman's daughter, Margaret, front left.  Others on the front row are first lady Bess Truman, Mt. Vernon Mayor Harry Bishop and Dana Picket.

FUGUA GROCERY 1938

J.M. Fuqua Grocer, 1515 Broadway, operated in this building which was eventually torn down to make way for a Clark Oil service station.

In this circa 1938 photo are J.M. "John" and Eveline Fuqua, at left, and store employee Clinton Miller, in the store window. Miller, who later operated Miller's Market at 726 N. eighth St. through the late 1960's, was the father of Clyde Miller of Mt. Vernon, who submitted this photo to The Register News.

Former Mt. Vernon Mayor Bill Thackery, a tenent in an upstairs room of the Fuqua home in 1942-43, recalls that the Fuquas lived downstairs in about half of the area, with the west part of the house a grocery store. "Johnnie Fuqua ran the store and Mrs. Fuqua ran the rooming house part upstairs. It was strickly just a rooming house with four rooms to rent, all upstairs; one bathroom served all four rooms. "I think the rent was about $7 per week,"Thackery recalls. The location at the southwest corner of 16th Street and Broadway is now part of a car dealership, Ford Suare of Mt. Vernon Ltd.
