Stephen Thatcher Stratton enlisted in the Civil War, August 25, 1862.
He was the Captain of Company E, 80th Infantry. After the war he built
the Stratton mansion that was located at 701 Jordan. He made his fortune
from sugar during the war. He owned the Hardware at ninth and Broadway
before the war. The building was 3 stories tall, it had a Drug Store and
a Dry Goods store on the first floor, The Opera House was on the second
floor and the Family's living Quarters were on the third floor before the
war. It was destroyed by the Tornado of 1888. He also had the Crews building
on the S/W corner of Ninth and B'way at one time. That was also destroyed
by the Tornado. He rebuilt and on the first floor there was a lending Library
