Aretha (Armstrong) York

Aretha York, 82, of Mt. Vernon, died 1:05 a.m. June 11, 2002, at St. Mary’s/Good Samaritan Hospital.

She was a waitress for many years in several area restaurants.

She was born Feb. 25, 1920, in Benton to William J. and Amy E. (Brown) Armstrong.

She married Dwight York July 2, 1941, in Bluford; he died Jan. 1, 1995.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Dale Burzynski will officiate. Burial will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call from noon Saturday until the funeral hour at the chapel at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. York is survived by two sons, Vincent York and wife Madonna of Kirkwood, Mo., and Gary York of Magnolia, Texas; two grandchildren, Angelia York of Kirkwood, Mo., and David York of St. Charles, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Myrna Armstrong of Mt. Vernon; and several nieces and nephews, including Bill Armstrong of Mt. Vernon.

Mrs. York was a member of Ina Missionary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three brothers, Gerald, Les and Earl Armstrong; and a sister, Elsie Clark.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, Ill., 62864.
