Sylvia H. (Duke) Wood

Sylvia H. Wood, 88, of Mt. Vernon died 2:15 a.m. July 3, 2005, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

She was born Sept. 29, 1916, in Marion County, a daughter of Paul W. and Katie (Helm) Duke.

Mrs. Wood was retired from Dobbs, having worked for them for several years. She was a charter member of Meadowbrook Christian Church, where she had taught the adult Sunday school class for several years. She belonged to the home extension for many years and loved to garden.

Mrs. Wood is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Keen and husband Jerry of Mt. Vernon; two sons, Lyle Wood and wife Dorothy of Mt. Vernon and Larry Wood and wife Mary Sue of Mt. Vernon; 10 grandchildren, John Keen and wife Laura of Ohio, Paula Wilson and husband Carl of Mt. Vernon, Jeff Keen of Bluford, Jarrell Keen and wife Suellen of Mt. Vernon, Jay Dee Keen and wife Stacie of Dahlgren, Brent Wood and wife Liz of Rushville, Brian Wood of San Diego, Calif., Greg Wood and wife Sheryl of Mt. Vernon, Gary Wood of Mt. Vernon and Carla Wood and fiance Mark Rich of Mt. Vernon; 10 great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jennie Edgington of Flora.

Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Roger Wood; and a brother, Norman Duke.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Meadowbrook Christian Church in Mt. Vernon, with Michael Sheets officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and also after 8:30 a.m. Thursday at Meadowbrook Christian Church in Mt. Vernon. For those who wish, memorials may be made to Meadowbrook Christian Church. Envelopes will be available at the church.

Meadowbrook Christian Church is located on the east side of Mt. Vernon near the airport. Turn north on Liebengood Road off of Route 15. Johnston Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon is in charge of arrangements, where you may call 242-0604 for more information.
