Carl N. Womack

ENFIELD

Carl N. Womack, 79, formerly of Mt. Vernon, Ill., died at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 7, 2007 at his home in Enfield.

He was born April 9, 1928 in Jefferson County, the son of Glenn N. Sr. and Lillian (Akers) Womack, and was married Oct. 2, 1949 at Mt. Vernon, Ill. to Jessie Naomi Mick, who survives.

He was raised at Enfield by his late grandparents, Zack and Nora Akers.

He served during World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps. Mr. Womack was a sheet metal worker and member of Sheet Metal Workers Local 268 of Caseyville and the Salem Moose Lodge. He loved the outdoors, was an avid hunter and fisherman and a Baptist.

Surviving are his wife, Naomi, of Enfield; three daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Jim Bodine, and Mary and Dennis Poston, all of Mt. Vernon, Ill., and Jim and Marlene Foster of Norris City; a brother and sister-in-law, Glenn Jr. and Margie Womack of Mt. Vernon, Ill.; two half-sisters, JoAnn Lacey of Tipton, Ind. and Norma Verleni of Naples, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Mark Womack; and two grandchildren, Jody and Amy.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, Ill., the Rev. Raymond Watson officiating, with interment in West Salem Cemetery at Mt. Vernon, Ill. The chaplain of Mt Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct a military flag presentation service.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. For those who wish, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, PO Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
