Samuel H. Wilson

SAMUEL WILSON DIED EARLY TODAY AT FAMILY HOME

Former Succesful Business Man had been in Poor Health Long Time. Funeral Thursday Afternoon.

Samuel H. Wilson died this morning at the family home 1002 Jones Street, following a period of ill health which lasted three years or more. Mr. Wilson had been confined to his room and his bed much of the time. His death occurred at 5:45 o’clock.

Mr Wilson was 70 years old the 22d of last December. He was a son of the late Robert Wilson and wife, and he was born in Tennessee.

He was for many years in the general mercantile business in Ina, and was one of the leading business men of the south part of Jefferson county. He located in Mt. Vernon several years ago, and until his health failed operated a store at Tenth and Jones Streets. He retired from business three or four years ago because of ill health. In the days of his active life he was very successfule in business and was recognized as a man of business acumen and good judgement.

He had many friends not only in Ina and the south part of the county, but in Mt. Vernon, and was held in the highest respect by all who knew him. He was a good citizen, and a most useful member of society. He was a member of the Christian church, and took much interest in the work of the church, and held membership in the First Christian Church of this city.

He was united in marriage with Mrs. Mary Yearwood December 27, 1926.

Mr. Wilson was twice married and is survived by his second wife, three sons and five daughters by his first marriage as follows: Henry of Bonnie, Ray and Tandy Wilson of Mt. Vernon; and Mrs. Alice McCormick, of Benton; Mrs. Joe Beckham and Mrs. Ira Bodine of Bonnie; Mrs. Fred Starkey, Chicago; and Miss Mildred Wilson, Mt. Vernon.

Two stepsons survive, viz: Lon Yearwood, Chicago; and Roy Yearwood, Detroit, Mich.; and one sister, Mrs. W. N. Hayse, Ina, survive. Eighteen grandchildren survive.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at the First Christian Church conducted by the pastor, the Rev. J. F Baxter, at 2 o’clock, and burial will follow in Kirk Cemetery.

Samuel Henry Wilson, son of Robert Henry Wilson and Elvira C Suddarth, was married (1st) on 13 Nov 1883 in Jefferson Co, IL to Mary Evelyn Strain, dau of F A C Strain and Sarah E Wadkins. He was married (2nd)on 4 Dec 1892 in Jefferson Co, IL to Georgia Anna Shelton, dau of Fielding and Elizabeth Shelton. He was married (3rd) to Mary A ?. The children of Samuel Henry Wilson and Mary Evelyn Strain are: (1) Della Edna Wilson born 12 May 1885 and died 17 Feb 1969 who is buried in the Kirk Cemetery and who married Henry Alve McCormick; (2) Nora Ella Wilson born 4 Jun 1887 in Jefferson Co, IL and died 12 Jan 1919 who married Louis Green Beckham; (3) Sam Erie Wilson born 16 Jan 1889 and died 16 Aug 1990 who married Joe Beckham; and (4) William Alva Wilson born 9 Dec 1891 and died 1918 who is buried in the Kirk Cemetery and who married Mary Ellen Rector. The children of Samuel Henry Wilson and Georgia Anna Shelton are: (1) Ollie Wilson born 22 Sep 1893 and died 1959 who married Ira A Bodine; (2) Henry Dale Wilson born 17 Aug 1895 and died 1961 who married Floey Alice Wells; (3) Ray A Wilson born 12 Nov 1900 and died 13 Nov 1952 who married Reba Newton; (4) Jesse Wilson born Dec 1902 and died 1932 who is buried in the Kirk Cemetery; (5) Opal Wilson born 5 Feb 1906 who married Fred Starke and ? Wall; (6) Tandy Wilson born 4 Jan 1`912 and died 1969 who married Velma Thougamarton; and (7) Mildred Wilson born 2 Sep 1913 who married Harold Henry Kries.
