Tarry A. Whitlock

Tarry A. Whitlock, 67, of Mt. Vernon died 6:20 p.m. April 30, 2005, at his home in rural Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Whitlock was born Dec. 25, 1937, in rural Texico to Alice (McMeen) Whitlock.

He married Ruth Ann (Hall) Whitlock Nov. 19, 1960, in Woodlawn at First Baptist Church of Woodlawn.

Mr. Whitlock was retired from the Consol Coal Mine near Sesser. Prior to working in the mines, he drove a gas truck for F.S. and later Mobil Oil. He served in the U.S. Army as a member of the Army Rangers.

Mr. Whitlock was a member of First Baptist Church of Woodlawn and United Mine Workers of America District 12.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed working with wood. Most of all he loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ann Whitlock of Mt. Vernon; two daughters, Regina Garrett and husband Ray of Mt. Vernon and Melinda Miller and husband Doug of Sesser. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Logan James Miller, Caleb Douglas Miller, Hannah Lynn Miller, Eli Tarry Garrett and Grant Stephen Garrett. He is also survived by two brothers, Ronnie Whitlock and wife Sandy of Centralia and Rex Whitlock and wife Lannie of Pennsylvania; and a sister, Carolyn Sue Hefner and husband Jerome of Texico.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Hope Garrett; and a brother, Larry Whitlock.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, with Roger Tate and Roger Lipe officiating. Burial will follow at Panther Fork Cemetery in rural Texico. Graveside military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 141 of Mt. Vernon. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. For those wishing, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Woodlawn or Hospice of Good Samaritan and will be accepted at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, where you may call 246-0100 for more information.
