Margaret K. “Peggy” (Kettel) Wells

Margaret K. “Peggy” Wells, 89, of St. Louis, Mo., and formerly of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 12:25 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007, at Missouri Veterans Home in St. Louis, Mo.

She was born on Friday, Sept. 27, 1918, in New Mexico, the daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Kelly) Kettel.

She married Dr. Charles K. Wells on May 12, 1958, in Mt. Vernon. He preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 1996.

Peggy was a U.S. Army Nurse in World War II and a homemaker.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon. Father Daniel Jurek and Rev. Robert F. Freytag will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. Members of the Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct full military honors.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

Peggy is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Kirk and husband Calvin of Springfield and Jane Shields of St. Charles, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Helen Wells of San Antonio, Texas; and four grandchildren, Lindsey Kirk of Springfield, Lauren Kirk of Springfield, Cassy Shields of St. Charles, Mo. and Carly Shields of St. Charles, Mo. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Her parents, husband and two brothers preceded her in death.

Peggy was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon, a member of St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary and was a volunteer with the American Red Cross for 50 years.

For those who wish, memorials may be given to the American Heart Association and will be accepted at the funeral home or mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, Ill. 62864.
