Harold W. Waite

Harold W. Waite, 88, 1234 N. 13th St., and late of Mt. Vernon Care Center, died 10:20 a.m. March 25, 1989, at Good Samaritan Regional Health Center.

Mr. Waite is a retired superintendent of Public Works for the city of Mt. Vernon and worked at Davidson Bakery for several years. He also worked for Willis Seed Co. and Midwest Seed Co. for 35 years. He owned and operated Jot Em Down Grocery Store, 4 miles east of Mt. Vernon. He was a lifetime resident of Jefferson County and was a farmer in his early years.

Mr. Waite was born Feb. 23, 1901, in Jefferson County, a son of Walter W. and Mary (Highsmith) Waite.

Dec. 23, 1954, in Mt. Vernon, he married Sarah Delaney, who died May 16, 1979.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Johnston Funeral Home with the Rev. Buss Hart officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Memorial Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Waite is survived by two brothers, Charles W. Waite of Mt. Vernon and Gerald Waite of Rock Falls; and two sisters, Pauline Moore and Vivian Goddard, both of Mt. Vernon; and 19 nieces and nephews.

Mr. Waite was an active member of Casey Avenue Baptist Church until his illness and a member of Modern Woodmen of America. He played baseball in the Jefferson County League, organized by John Koblox.

Mr. Waite was preceded in death by his wife; parents; one brother, Glenn; and one sister, Opal Hanley.
