Anthony Waite

Anthony Waite, John Waite's brother, an old and well known resident of this immediate family, died at the residence of his daughter Mrs John Coates 3 1/2 miles south east of Mt. Vernon. He died on this 85th birthday.

He was a native of Yorkshire England but he lived in the neighborhood where he died for nearly 50 years.

He was an excellent citizen, a humble christian held in high esteem.

Mrs. Coates and Mrs. James Webber were the only children he leaves surviving him.

His remains were buried at Union Cemetery.

At Rest

Mr. Anthony Waite died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Coats, January 8th, 1894.

He was born in Slingsby, England, in 1808. He never knew the exact date of his birth, but it was the custom in the Church of England to baptize infants at about 8 days old. He had the date of his baptism, which was January 8th, 1809 and strange as it was, he died on that same date, 85 years after.

Mr. Waite left England in the year 1840 and came to Illinois. He resided in Morgan county for a while and then came to Jefferson county.

He was married to Mary Emily Johnson, daughter of James and Clarissa Johnson, August 2, 1843.

They had four children, Mrs. James Webber, Mrs. Charlie Pieper, Mrs. John Coats and Victoria, who died in infancy.

Mr. Waite moved to Franklin county after he was married and lived there a few years, then came back to Jefferson county, where he has ever since resided.

His mind became unbalanced in 1873 and he was rational only at times until he died. He had lived with his daughter, Mrs. John Coats for 20 years prior to his death.

He professed religion in early life and always loved the church of his blest redeemer.

His remains were interred in Old Union cemetery. A Friend.
