George Frank Thompson Sr.

G. Frank Thompson Sr., 77, Mt. Vernon, passed away at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2008, at the Marion Veterans Hospital.

He was born in Mt. Vernon on March 25, 1931, a son of Ray and Pansy (Huggins) Thompson.

He first married Jennie Wilkey on Oct. 13, 1951, in Arkansas, and she preceded him in death on March 11, 1997.

He later married Lila Yandell O'Neal in Mt. Vernon on Nov. 7, 1998.

He was an auto mechanic and owner and operator of Thompson and Sons Garage in Opdyke.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with the Revs. Garlin Burris, Don Verhines and Steve Hamson officiating. Interment will be at Oddfellows Cemetery in Opdyke. A military flag prenstation(sic) will be preformed(sic) by Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Lila Thompson of Mt. Vernon; two sons, Frank Thompson Jr. and wife Donna of Mt. Vernon and Nigel Thompson and wife Brenda of Mt. Vernon; four daughters, Gaylyn Miller and husband Dave of Carlsbad, N.M., Starlyn Forby and husband Randy of Mt. Vernon, Stella Mayo and husband Ronnie of Opdyke and Debbie Lenox and husband Bob of Peachtree City, GA.; two stepsons, Dennis O'Neal and wife Teresa of Mt. Vernon and Sam O'Neal and wife Carol of Anna; stepdaughter, Kathy O'Neal of Benton; 21 grandchildren, Joshua, Lucas, Ethan, Cody, Gabriel, and Alexandra O'Neal, all of Mt. Vernon, Zachary O'Neal of Anna, Landrey O'Neal of Benton, B.J., Kelsey and Hannah Woodcock, all of Anna, Tim Rigers and wife Deanna of Carlsbad, N.M., Jennifer Clarkston and husband Cash of Carlsbad, N.M., Frank Thompson III and wife Jacenta of Mt. Vernon, Jeremy Thompson of Mt. Vernon, Bruce Forby and wife Brittany of Mt. Vernon, Matthew Forby and friend Karen of Mt. Vernon, Sharanah Lipps and husband Chet of Arkansas, Nicholas Mayo and fiancee Chelsea Fowler of Opdyke, Damon Mayo of Opdyke and Stacy Campbell and husband James of Peachtree City, Ga.; and nine great-grandchildren.

His parents and first wife preceded him in death.

Mr. Thompson was a member of the Summersville Baptist Church.

He served in the United States Marine Corp from Feb. 7, 1952, until Feb. 6, 1954.

He loved his flowers and fish garden.
