Charles M. Sword

Charles M. Sword, 88, of Mt. Vernon died 9:31 p.m. Dec. 19, 1999, at St. Mary’s/Good Samaritan, Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Sword was a barber at the Main Street Barber Shop for 32 years and was the owner of the shop for several years.

He was born March 6, 1911, in Russell County, Va., to E. Harrison and Minnie (Poston) Sword.

He married Mary Olive Norris on Dec. 21, 1945, in West Frankfort; she survives.

Services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert F. Freytag officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens. Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 141 of Mt. Vernon. Friends may call after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Robert C. Sword and wife Jeannean of Mt. Vernon; a daughter, Sharon Lea Warmack and husband J.D. of Alexandria, Va.; two grandchildren, Dustin Sword of Mt. Vernon and Gabe Warmack of Denver, Colo.; two sisters, Thelma Bandy of Peach Bottom, Pa., and Ethel Helton of Honaker, Va.; two brothers, Coi Sword and wife Ruth of Cedar Bluff, Va., and Clinton Sword of Old Fort, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Sword attended the First Presbyterian Church. He was the oldest of 13 children in his family. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a lifetime member of the AMVETS Post No. 4 of Mt. Vernon, and member of American Legion Post 141 of Mt. Vernon. He was also a member of VFW Post 1376 of Mt. Vernon, a life member of the Mt. Vernon Moose Lodge, and a member of the Barbers local union for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, and one sister.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church and will be accepted at the funeral home.
