Betty Sue (Meadows) Southerd

Betty Sue Southerd, 65, of Mt. Vernon died 5:50 p.m. Aug. 20, 2005, at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

She was a breakfast cook at Holiday Inn for 28 1/2 years.

Mrs. Southerd was born March 29, 1940, in Mt. Vernon to John W. and Ethel Maude (Carpenter) Meadows.

She married Gale Southerd June 1, 1978, in Mt. Vernon; he survives.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Osborn Funeral Home in Dix. Richard Pierce will officiate. Burial will follow at Boyd Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Osborn Funeral Home in Dix.

Mrs. Southerd is survived by her husband, Gale Southerd of Mt. Vernon; a son, Billie Beckham and wife Crystal of Mt. Vernon; a daughter, Sue Cox and husband Harold of Mt. Vernon; two stepdaughters, Sharon Thomas and husband Bob of Mt. Vernon and Carol Riggs and husband Mike of Centralia; grandchildren Heather and Matt Arnett, Alisa Cox, Amand Thomas, Christopher and Kristy Riggs and Blase Beckham, all of Mt. Vernon, Cassandra and Michael Caldwell of Denver, Colorado, Phillip and Cindi Thomas of Missouri, Michael Riggs of Centralia and Mark Riggs of Centralia; great-grandchildren Keira Arnett of Mt. Vernon, Christopher and Shelby Riggs of Kankakee, Sumer Riggs of Mt. Vernon, Meranda, Blyke and Kassi Riggs, all of Mt. Vernon, and Kelsey, Amelia, and Jessica Thomas, all of Missouri; sisters Shirley Anderson and husband Mike of Memphis, Tenn., Sharion Johnson and husband Jerry of Woodlawn, Ida Reeves of Mt. Vernon and Vera Hayes and husband Rick of Mt. Vernon; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in deathy by her parents; a brother, John Henry Meadows; a stepbrother, Edward Tate; and three sisters, Rita Meadows, Nancy Meadows and Elizabeth Meadows.

Mrs. Southerd attended Ebenezer and Rome grade schools. She was of the Baptist faith.

Memorials may be made to Relay For Life and will be received at the funeral home at amy time.
