Gale P. Smith

Gale P. Smith, 88, of Dyersburg, Tenn., and formerly of Mt. Vernon died 8:20 p.m. Oct. 26, 2004, at the home of his son in Dyersburg, Tenn.

He was employed for many years in grocery and wholesale sales at Jackson & Martin IGA.

Mr. Smith was born June 13, 1916, in Jefferson County to Charles H. and Rebecca (Wilson) Smith.

He married Merlene (Minor) Smith Feb. 29, 1940, in Charleston, Mo.; she survives.

Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Harmony Cemetery in rural Jefferson County. Guy Leonard will officiate. Those attending this service are asked to go directly to the cemetery on Saturday. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Merlene Smith of Dyersburg, Tenn.; sons Calvin G. Smith and wife Glenda of Waco, Texas, Larry Smith and wife Colleen of Columbia, Tenn., Rickey L. Smith and wife Carla of Dyersburg, Tenn., and Roger Smith of Dyersburg, Tenn.; grandchildren Farron Smith of Waco, Texas, Erin Smith of Waco, Texas, April Webb and husband John of Waco, Texas, Melody Jones and husband Roger of Snellville, Ga., Yvonne Hardy and husband Jody of Long View, Texas, Bryan Smith and wife Shannon of Columbia, Tenn., Jason Smith of Columbia, Tenn., and Derek Smith of Dyersburg, Tenn.; great-grandchildren Johnny Webb of Waco, Texas, Roger Jones of Snellville, Ga., and Trent Lee Smith of Columbia, Tenn.; brothers George Smith of Bonnie and Leonard Smith of Mt. Vernon; sisters Eva Weems of Salem, Jennie Dalton of Mt. Vernon, Fern Sechrest and husband Hal of Mt. Vernon and Katie Halterman of Centralia; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

Mr. Smith was a member of Southwest Christian Church.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
