Mrs. Smith Passed Away Friday Years of Suffering Had Made Her Life One Creating Unusual Sympathy

Deceased Was Born in Jefferson County 68 Years Ago in the Pleasant Grove Neighborhood; Funeral Held Sunday

Released from a period of suffering covering many years, Mrs. George W. Smith passed away Friday afternoon about 4 o'clock at the family residence at 319 Main street. Her sickness had lasted for more than 19 years, most of the time she was so weakened that she was compelled to remain in her bed. Her friends, knowing of her serious condition, marveled that she could show such fortitude as was so often in evidence.

This suffering rounded out her life and while she was detained in her home and unable to get about doing good she ever has the needs of suffering humanity in mind and was one of the most willing to lend a helping hand where she could.

Mrs. Smith was the daughter of the late T. L. and Sarah Moss.

She was a member of one of the best known and most highly respected families of the county and one that had helped make history for Jefferson county.

She is survived by her husband, who was ever alive to her sufferings and always at her command when she wanted the soothing tough of a loved one; also by five children as follows: Otto, Walter, and Jessie Smith, Mrs. Thomas F. Johnson of this city, and Mrs. Frank Read of Detroit, Mi.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the First M.E. church, having transferred her membership from the Pleasant Grove branch to the local branch. She was one of the most active members in her church in Pleasant Grove while a resident of that vicinity, but since she has resided in Mt. Vernon her health would not permit of much activity in the busy outside world.

The funeral service will be conducted by Rev. C.C. Hall, at the residence at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Interment at Oakwood. The body will lie in state from 1:30 to 2:45.
