Lela A. (Hughey) Sledge

Lela A. Sledge Of Bonnie Died At Age 79

Lela A. Sledge, 79, Route 1, Bonnie, died at 5:45 a.m. today at the Jeffersonian Nursing Home.

She was employed for several years at the Mt. Vernon Garment Factory, as a seamstress.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Hughey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Bailey and the Rev. C. W. Coats officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Sesser.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 5 p.m. Tuesday. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Mrs. Sledge was born Feb. 21, 1902, in Jefferson County, the daughter of J. B. and Della Jane (Drennan) Hughey.

On Feb. 27,, 1920, in Bonnie, she married Wayman Sledge, who survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Eugene (Virginia) Cockrum, Sesser, Mrs. Clyde (Helen) Roberson, and Mrs. Ray (Doris) Newell, both of Bonnie; one brother, Sam Hughey, Mt. Vernon; one sister, Grace Kinman, Clearwater, Fla.; six grandchildren, Connie Cavaletto, Salem, Janet MyGatt, and Ronald Roberson both of Sesser, Rodney Roberson and Eddie Newell, both of Bonnie, and Nancy Brehm of Mt. Vernon; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one sister, two half-brothers, and one half-sister.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Vernon; a 50-year member of the Royal Neighbors of America and the Fidelia Class of the First Baptist Church.
