Carl Hugh Shurtz, son of Andrew J. and Mary E. Shurtz was born December 6, 1886 and passed away November 2, years 10 months and 26 days.

He was united in marriage with Georgia Fairchild.

To this union were born 7 children, Roger F., U. S. Navy, Norfolk, VA, Dorothy Ferris, Lynchburg, VA., Max of Waltonville, Carlyn Hirons, Mt. Vernon, Andrew J., U. S. Navy, Memphis, Tenn., Charles R., Waltonville, Barbara Ann, Waltonville and 14 grandchildren.

Carl was one of 16 children, surviving are: Sarah, Etta, Mary, Francis, Menzo, Vada and Gemma.

He was preceded in death by John, William, Dave, Arthur, Ann, Georgia, Carrie and Mary W.

Early in life he was united with the Missionary Baptist Church.

Carl was a prominent and life resident of Jefferson County where he became at an early age, and until his final day, a leader of his community.

He will long be remembered for his diligent and devoted campaign to better educate the youth of this community. President of the School Board, Member Board of Supervisors, father, farmer, Woodman and Mason where in each he displayed those qualities which continued to place him a leader among men.

We wish to thank everyone who contributed in the least possible way to the comforting and the lessening of our sorrow during the illness and death of our loved one.

On June 13, 1912 he married Georgia Fairchild in DuQuoin, IL.
