Wendell Shields Dies at Age 67; Rites Thursday
Wendell Shields, Sr., of 621 south 12th street, died at 6:12 this
morning at Good Samaritan Hospital, where he had been a patient for the past
two weeks.
Mr. Shields, a retired butcher, was 67 years, seven months and 29 days
of age.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Myers Chapel.
The Rev. Everett Lemay will officiate and burial will be in West Salem
cemetery.
The body will lie in state at Myers Chapel where friends may call after
4:00 p.m. Wednesday.
Mr. Shields was born September 10, 1899 at Dix, the son of Bruce and
Minnie (Walker) Shields.
In August, 1919, he was married in Mt. Vernon, to Essie Fleener, who
survives.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, William W. Shields, Jr.
of McLeansboro, and Charles Edward Shields and J.D. Shields, both of
Mt. Vernon; three sisters Hazel Breeze and Martha Lovin of Mt. Vernon and
Mary Lou "Babe" Lowery of California; a brother, Ivan Shields of Mt.
Vernon; and seven grandchildren.
