Paul A. Shields

Paul A. Shields, 89, of Mt. Vernon died 10:35 p.m. June 13, 2006, at Illinois Veterans Home at Anna.

He ws a meat inspector for the state of Illinois.

Mr. Shields was born Jan. 11, 1917, in Jefferson County to Frank N. and Cora (Branson) Shields.

He married Doris (Pickett) Shields June 27, 1954, in Mt. Vernon; she preceded him in death Oct. 1, 1990.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday in the chapel at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, with military flag presentation conducted by the chaplain of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141. The Rev. Mike Steed will officiate. Those wishing to attend are asked to gather at the chapel.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Shields is survied by a daughter, Paula Minor and husband Marty of Bluford; a granddaughter, Mallory Minor of Bluofrd; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers, Howard, Finley and Glenn Shields and a sister, June Flora?.

Mr. Shields owned and operated East Side Cleaners in Mt. Vernon for over 20 years. He served as a medic in the U.S. Army during World War II, was a member of Logan Street Baptist Church and was a member of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141.

For those who wish, memorials may be given to Illinois Veterans Home at Anna and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL. 62864.
