Gladys Marie (Webber) Shields

Gladys Marie Shields, age 84, of Mt. Vernon died 9:04 A.M. Saturday, March 21, 2009 at her home in Mt. Vernon.

Mrs. Shields was born July 31, 1924, a daughter of William H. "Dick" and Bertha M. (Boyle) Webber.

She married Charles E. Shields on July 19, 1942 in Jackson, Mo. He died April 15, 1995

Gladys was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon. She formerly worked for Carp's but spent the last years of her life as mother and grandmother.

Gladys is survived by two daughters, Charla Bender of Winter Haven, Fla. and Nikki Lane of Mt. Vernon; two granddaughters whom she adopted, Tonya Jolly and fiancé Terry Pride of Whittington, and Rebecca Lane of Mt. Vernon; four grandchildren, Tammy and husband Andy Caraker of Winter Haven, Fla., Lisa and husband Pete Kargakos of Winter Haven, Fla., Mandy and husband Barry Jackson of Dayton, Ohio, and Scott Bender and wife Jessica of Valdosta, Ga., seven great-grandchildren, Drew, Cassidy and Carter Caraker, Ana and Alexis Kargakos, Samantha Jackson and Natalie Jolly.

She was expecting a great-grandchild and her first great-great-grandchild at any time.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at Bethel Cemetery in Mt. Vernon with Rev. Bud Storey officiating. Friends are requested to go directly to the cemetery. Visitation will be held tonight from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Newell Funeral Home in Mt.Vernon.

For those wishing, memorials may be given in memory of Gladys Shields to Epworth Methodist Church and will be accepted at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, IL.
