Betty Louise (Turpin) Ross

Betty Louise Ross, 79, of Mt. Vernon died 12:43 p.m. March 4, 2005, at the home of her daughter.

She was born Dec. 18, 1925, in Mt. Vernon to John C. and Ruth (Kern) Turpin.

Mrs. Ross was a sales clerk, working at Peers Shoe Store, Montgomery Ward, Dollen's Shoe Store and ended her career with Lynn Ann Shop.

No public services will be held. Visitation is set for 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home.

Survivors include two daughters, Jacque Ragain and husband Dan of Mt. Vernon and Julie Ross of Mt. Vernon; son Jerry Ross and wife Kim of Marion; grandchildren Mallory, Joshua, Brittany, Phoebe and Jacob; step-grandchildren Candice, Megan and Tyler; brothers John W. Turpin of Mt. Vernon and Allen Eugene Turpin and wife Marge of Marion.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Betty was devoted to helping any way she could. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Her family was very important to her. The promise of her life shows through in her children. She helped raise her brothers and helped her mother. Betty continues to help those who were most important to her as well as all that knew her, even in death. Betty donated her body to science at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Carbondale in order to help the students further their education in medicine. She was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospice and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Hughey Funeral Home, where you may call 618-242-3348 for further information.
