Stephen D. Rogers

Stephen D. Rogers, 62, of Mt. Vernon, died 2 a.m. March 15, 2007, at St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

He was born June 10, 1944, in Murphysboro, to Durward Rogers and Merle (Yandell) Rogers Phillips.

He married Susan Hayman on Dec. 19, 1965, in Mt. Vernon.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon. Rev. David Eadie and Rev. Murriel Nance will officiate. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Steve is survived by his wife Susan Rogers of Mt. Vernon; sons Matthew Rogers and wife Missy of Troy, Christopher Rogers of Lexington, Tenn.; Wendy Rogers of Mt. Vernon; grandson Peyton Owens of Mt. Vernon; father-in-law and mother-in-law Dr. William and Dot Hayman of Mt. Vernon; sisters-in-law Sally Mueller and husband Mel of Mt. Vernon, and Nancy Rhiannon and partner Zane of Portland, Ore.; aunts Leonora Garrison of Mt. Vernon, and Jane Butler and husband Chuck of Chambersburg, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

His parents, stepfather Proctor Phillips, and two infant sons preceded him in death.

Steve was a middle-school teacher who taught at McClellan and Lincoln grade schools and Casey Middle School; he also coached baseball and basketball and later wrote the Sports Column for the Centralia Sentinel; he served in the U.S. Air Force, was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon, and was an active volunteer and board member for the Angels on Assignment program. He was a past president of the Mt. Vernon Kiwanis Club and a member of the Mt. Vernon Elks Club.
