John Ellsworth Phillips

Mt. Vernon, Illinois

John Ellsworth Phillips died at 11:20 o'clock this morning at his home, 233 Opdyke Avenue. His age was 84 years, 11 months and 11 days.

Mr. Phillips was a retired farmer.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Old Shiloh Church, with the Rev. Angus Phillips of Kinmundy officiating, and burial will be in Old Shiloh Cemetery.

At noon Saturday, the body will be taken from the Pulley Funeral Home to the family home, where friends may call at any time until the funeral hour.

Mr. Phillips was born December 27, 1865 in Rome Township, the son of Joseph and Rebecca Elizabeth Phelps Phillips.

He was married October 1, 1886, in Jefferson County, to Mary Elizabeth Tate, who survives.

Mr. and Mrs. Phillips, who were known by their many friends as Uncle John and Aunt Libby, spent their lives in and near Mt. Vernon and celebrated their 64th anniversary on October 1 this year.

Mr. Phillips was a member of the Old Shiloh Methodist Church.

Besides his wife, he is survived by five sons, Joe R. of Henry, Ill., John Merritt of Lowpoint, Ill., Bert of Moweaqua, Ill., and Harley and Burrell of Mt. Vernon; five daughters, Mrs. Maude Huff of Bloomington, Ill., Mrs. Blossom Herron of Washburn, Ill., Mrs. Myrtle Thomas and Mrs. Gail Nealy of Mt. Vernon, and Mrs. Doris Cooley of Macon, Ill.; onebrother, Orville C. Phillips of Mt. Vernon; one sister Mrs. Ida Cady of Sheridan, Ill.; 23 grandchildren and 33 great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, three brothers and three sisters.
