Rev. F. Glenn Payne

The Rev. F. Glenn Payne, 93, of Belle Rive, passed away at 3:40 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, at Nature Trail Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon.

He was born in Wayne County on Aug. 17, 1915, a son of Omar Allen and Pansey E. (Jenkins) Payne.

He married Nellie Alice Overbey on Oct. 3, 1936, in Salem.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Chucrh in Belle Rive with the Rev. Richard McCormick and Jeremy Hamson officiating. Interment will follow at Belle Rive Cemetery in Belle Rive with full military honors conducted by Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon and on Friday the family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.

The Rev. Payne is survived by his wife of 72 years, Nellie Alice Payne of Mt. Vernon; two sons, Ferrell F. Payne of Opdyke and David D. Payne and wife Tammy of Mt. Vernon; two daughters, Alice Ann Garlington and husband Terry of Odessa, Texas and Nova Nell Herin and husband “Buddy” of Corpus Christi, Texas; daughter-in-law, Karen Payne of Corpus Christi, Texas; 10 grandchildren, Jodie J. Stover and husband Mark, Robin R. Payne and wife Krista and Justin D. and Jarod A. Payne, all of Mt. Vernon, Rhonda Ann Ely and husband Bryan of Tyler, Texas, Teresa Ann McIntire and husband Kyle of Anson, Texas, Ronna Kay Payne-Pederson and husband Jay of Sugarland, Texas, Shauna Marie Payne-Michaels and husband Michael of Corpus Christi, Texas, Stephanie Michelle Herin of Pflugerville, Texas and Elysia Renae Herin of Corpus Christi, Tex-as; two step-grandchildren, Jason Herin of Charlotte, N. C., and Jen-nifer Herin of San Antonio; 12 great-grandchildren, Cody, Clay, and Reece Payne, Emma and Gracie Stover, Mckensie Jo McIlrath, and Kelsie Payne, all of Mt. Vernon, Kayla Ann and Trista Leigh McIntire of Anson, Texas, Bailey Ann and Tayler Ann Ely of Tyler, Texas and Beau Presley Michaels of Corpus Christi, Texas; a sister, Vera Willmore of Austin, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents; son, Nolan Neal Payne; and two brothers, Robert L. and Kenneth L. Payne preceded him in death.

He was called into ministry in 1953. After being ordained by the Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Church in 1954, he pastored many churches.

He moved to Joliet in 1959 and helped start new churches in that area until moving back to Southern Illinois in 1965. He continued to hold revivals and act as supply pastor in many local churches.

Serving the Lord and enjoying his family were his delight. He was a member of Illinois Campers on Mission and Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Church

For those who wish, memorials may be given to the Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Church or Baptist Childrens Home and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
