George Nichols

George Nichols Dies of Injuries in Auto Crash Rites Saturday for Waltonville Man; Wife Seriously Hurt

George Nichols, 66, of Waltonville, died at 2:30 p.m. yesterday at Jefferson Memorial Hospital from injuries suffered in a car-truck collision Tuesday afternoon on the Waltonville Road.

His wife, Ethel, 56, who was seriously injured in the accident, was reported in "fair" condition at the hospital today.

Mr. Nichols, a watchman at the Mt. Vernon Car Mfg. Co., died from head and chest injuries.

The accident, which occurred at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, was a head-on collision between Nichols’ car and a truck driven by Paul Connor, 35, of RFD, Bonnie. Mr. Connor was shaken up but did not require hospitalization.Coroner Ben Roeder scheduled an inquest for 10 a.m. tomorrow at the court house in Mr. Nichols’ death.

Mr. Nichols was born February 20, 1885 in Elk Prairie Township, Jefferson County, the son of Conrad and Ann M. (Fagan) Nichols.

He was married to Ethel Jones, who survives.

Mr. Nichols was a member of the Bakerville Baptist church and B. R. C. of A. Lodge No. 423.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Roy of Scheller and Aubrey of Mt. Vernon; two daughters, Mrs. Geneva Lisenby of Woodstock, Ill., and Mrs. Mary Ann Deem of Chicago; two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Jones of Mt. Vernon and Mrs. Lizzie Stiman of Herrin; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Myers Chapel, with the Rev. Marsh Harpole officiating, and burial will be in Bethel Memorial cemetery.

The body will remain at Myers Chapel, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Friday.
