Mrs. Newell's death was due to typhoid fever. She was one of the best known and best loved women in the southwestern part of Jefferson County and had many friends and relatives in Mt. Vernon. She had been a member of the Waltonville M. E. church for about 50 years, having been converted during a meeting held by Rev. J. C. Kinison. She was a regular attendant at church services. No one was more faithful to the tenets of the church and her character was above reproach.

Mrs. Newell was a practical christian and delighted in assisting others when in her power, and was true to every obligation of life. She continued the kindly ministrations characteristic of a well spent life, until her last illness, having assisted in caring for a little neighbor boy who had typhoid fever, until stricken herself about the first of August.
