Stephen Douglas Newell

Stephen Douglas "Doug" NEWELL, youngest son of Asa B. and Margaret Newell, was born July 18, 1858 and died May 9, 1922, at the age of 63 years, 9 months and 21 days.

In 1880,he was united in marriage to Emily Fairchild, whose death occurred in the year 1899.

To this union were born two sons, George Warren Newell and Asa Eli Newell and five daughters, Mrs. Ola Davis; Mrs. Rhoda Brady; Mrs. Sarah Harrett (?); Mrs. Cecil Black and Mrs. Grace Hester (?), all of whom survived except two of the daughters, Sarah and Grace.

May 17, 1909, he was married to Mrs. Lucy Hamilton, who with one brother, Phillip Newell; two half-brothers, George and Oscar Newell (the latter living in Kansas) and eleven grandchildren remain to mourn his death.

During the greater part of his life he resided on the Old Newell homestead in Blissville Township. Title to this farm was acquired by his father, one of the pioneers of Jefferson County in the year of 1843.

"Uncle Doug" as he was familiarly called by his many friends, was a man of plain and unassuming habits; he held not to a religion of theory, but one of practice. Honesty was the keynote of his everyday life.

During the last sickness, he was inclined to look on the bright and sunny side and when those of his friends and neighbors called daily to inquire, as to his welfare, his answer was always, "I am better".

Truly, it can be said the world is better for his having lived in it.

Burial Services were conducted at the Cyrus Gilbert cemetery northwest of town on May 10th.
