Wilford (Bud) C. Nelson

Mrs. Erma Jean Nelson of 208 South 5th Street was notified by the War Department yesterday that her husband, S/Sgt. Wilford (Bud) C. Nelson, one of the first Americans to set foot on French soil in the invasion, was killed in action July 6.

S/Sgt. Nelson was 23 years old. He entered the service August 28, 1942 and received his training at Camp Wheeler, Ga., and Fort Meade, Md. On May 30, 1943, he arrived overseas.

S/Sgt. Nelson is the son of Mr. And Mrs. Charles Nelson of RFD 6.

Surviving besides his wife and parents are one brother, Pvt. Byford Nelson who is some place in England and five sisters who are Mrs. Clarence Purcell, Mrs. Sam Hale of Bluford, Miss Fern Nelson at home, Mrs. Frank Glen of McLeansboro and Mrs. Dorothy Wasom of Belleville.

S/Sgt. Nelson had written home recently that he had met his brother somewhere in England.
