Dr. H.C. Moss Dies; Practiced Here 30 Years

Dr. Harry Corwin Moss of 204 W. Oak street, 78, died this morning at 1:15 a.m. in Holden hospital. He is survived by nine nieces and nephews.

Dr. Moss was born July 15th, 1869 in Jefferson county, near Mt. Vernon.

He graduated from Washington University, St. Louis, in March of 1898 and began practicing medicine in Albion in May of that year. He came to Carbondale in May, 1918, and had been a practicing physician here since that time. His offices were formerly on West Main street, in what is now the Patterson Hardware building, but at the time of his death were located at 204 W. Oak.

Mrs. Moss died February 24, 1944. She was the former Elizabeth Wilson of Marissa.

Dr, Moss was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Modern Woodmen of America, Ben Hur, Consistory of the Shrine, and the First Methodist church. He was the son of Capt. John R. Moss and Parmelia Allen Moss, both members of pioneer families in Illinois.

Dr. J.W. Barrow, friend of Dr. Moss' said today that "he was a good country doctor in a small town, a general physician, charitable, certainly a good citizen, and never willingly did any harm to anyone."

Dr. Moss was known to many for his unusual cane collection and his help in the drive to collect funds with which to build the present First Methodist church.

The body will be at the Carbondale funeral home until time for the services, scheduled to be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Methodist church with the Rev. Clyde S. Clark, assisted by Dr. C.C. Hall, officiating. Burial will be in Oakland cemetery.
