Mae (McCord) Maxey

Mae Maxey Johnson, 102, of Bluford died 5:40 a.m. Jan. 28, 2003, at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Johnson was born March 15, 1900, in Wayne County to James E. and Flora Ann (Carter) McCord.

She married Ray Maxey Jan, 17, 1918 in Bluford; he preceded her in death Oct. 19, 1959. She later married Marshall Johnson Sept. 27, 1972 in Oregon, ILL; he died Aug, 13, 1974.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Hughey Funeral Home. The Rev. Bill Prince will officiate. Burial will be at Oakdale Cemetery in rural Jefferson County.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hughey Funeral Home.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by two sons, Nobel Maxey and wife Mary, and Donald Maxey, all of Bluford, three daughters, Pauline Braddock and husband Nolan, and Lucy Patterson and husband Everett, all of Bluford, and Verla Steward and husband, Bob of Harrison, MI, a stepson, Wayne Johnson, a stepdaughter, Marjorie Hammer of Cincinnati, Ohio, and one brother, Lawrence McCord of Rock Falls, 26 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; 51 great-great grandchildren, 11 step-grandchildren; one step great-great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

She was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by both husbands, one daughter, Jewell Maxey, 1 granddaughter, Nina Wheeler, 4 brothers, 6 sisters, 2 sons-in-law and 1 daughter-in-law. For those who wish, memorials may be made to Oakdale Cemetery and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, Illinois 62864.
