Conrad E. “Connie” Maxey

Conrad E. “Connie” Maxey, 62, Mt. Vernon, passed away at 12:08 pm. on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007 at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

He was born in Jefferson County on Thursday, Sept. 20, 1945, the son of Chancey and Anna Mae (Evans) Maxey.

He married Sharon Collins on Dec. 27, 1980, in Mt. Vernon.

He was a patrolman for the Mt. Vernon Police Department, was later part of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department Drug Enforcement Administration, was a firefighter with and later retired as maintenance officer for the Mt. Vernon Fire Department.

Ernie Collins, Chaplain of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post #141 will conduct a military flag presentation service 8 pm Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 pm Saturday at the funeral home.

Connie is survived by his wife, Sharon Maxey of Mt Vernon; son, Scott Maxey and wife Monica of Mt. Vernon; daughter, Cindy VanAmerongen and husband Ben of Chicago; two grandchildren, Damon Wright and Emma Maxey of Mt. Vernon; two step-daughters, Marian Leahy and husband Mark of Mt. Vernon, Elaine Brainard and husband Gary of Olney; three step-grandchildren, Amber and Samantha Leahy of Mt Vernon, and Matthew Creadore of Olney; two brothers, Denver Maxey and wife Wanda of New Caney, Texas, Clyde Maxey and wife Helen of Salem; sister, Donna Kay Didding and husband Bill of Joliet. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

His parents preceded him in death.

Connie was a past commander and lifetime member of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post #141, Mt. Vernon Masonic Lodge #31 and the Jefferson County Gun & Sportsman’s Club. For those who wish, memorials may be given to the Mt. Vernon Fire Department andd will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864
