William H. Maxey

Well Known Man of Shiloh Died At Early Hour
William H. Maxey, Member of Highly Respected Pioneer Family, Will be Buried Thursday Afternoon

William H. Maxey died at 12:30 o'clock this morning at his home in Shiloh Township.

Funeral services will be held in New Shiloh church Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Mr. Maxey was a member of a pioneer family of Jefferson county, and was born in Shiloh township August 5, 1853. His father was William T. Maxey, a prominent farmer of Shiloh township in his day. He was in his 881st year at the time of his death.

William H. Maxey was the oldest of three children, and the last survivor of his father's family.

Mr. Maxey was united in marriage June 7, 1852, with Miss Martha L. Harper, who proceeded him in death. One son, Ashley E. Maxey, survives.

Mr. Maxey engaged his entire life in farming, and made an intelligent study of agriculture and familiarized himself with the best methods of farming and caring for crops. The care of the soil, care in selection of seed, etc., important phases of successful farming, were appreciated by him, and he was always progressive, leaving nothing undone to insure his success in his life work.

It was said of Mr. Maxey in a sketch published in 1909: "The Maxey homestead is one of the best known in its locality, not only because several generations of the family have occupied it, but because the social atmosphere is most genuine and pleasant, and once enjoyed, is not soon forgotten. Mr. Maxey is also well known in the general affairs of the township, having taken deep interest in matters pertaining to the general welfare. He has at various times filled the offices of township supervisor, clerk, and trustee.

Note:
*881st was a typo in the article as was the marriage date of 1852 which would have been impossible. Date of marriage - March 6th, 1873 in Jefferson County, Illinois

From Sandy: this appears to be his marriage:
