Jewell (Dodson) Mullinax Laird

Funeral services for Mrs. Jewell Laird, 71, of 915 South 17th Street will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Nazarene Church. The Rev. Byron L. Beaty will officiate and burial will be in Old Shiloh Cemetery.

The body will lie in state at Myers Chapel where friends may call after 4:00 p.m. Monday. The body will be taken to the Church at noon Tuesday.

Mrs. Laird died at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at her home.

She was born Jan. 2, 1898, in Jefferson County, the daughter of William “Bud” and Eunice (Ingram) Dodson.

She was married to Ptolemy Mullinax, who preceded her in death.

She was later married to Wilber S. Laird, who survives.

Mrs. Laird was a member of the Nazarene Church.

Survivors, besides her husband, include four daughters, Mrs. Mildred England, of Chicago, Mrs. Grace Schmitt, of Lockport, Mrs. Wanda Carpenter, of West Chicago, and Mrs. Violet Bradshaw, of Joliet; two sons, C. Richard Mullinax and Delvin M. Mullinax, both of Mt. Vernon; five sisters, Mrs. Robert Raymond, of Big Rock, Ill., Mrs. Stowell Massey, at home, Mrs. William Smith, of Elcinore, Mo., Mrs. Logan Richardson and Mrs. Harold Williams, both of Mt. Vernon; one brother Raymond Dodson, of St. Louis; 31 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

One grandchild, Gary Brown, was raised in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Laird.

Mrs. Laird was preceded in death by one son, one daughter, three brothers, and two sisters.
