Sarah L. (Rice) Johnson

Mrs. Sarah L. Johnson, whose death was briefly mentioned in yesterday's Daily Register, passed peacefully away about 1:30p.m., Tuesday, January 30, in her 80th year of life.

She was known as "Aunt Lou" and when the annoucement of the death of Mrs. Sarah L. Johnson was made, many persons of her most intimate acquaintance did not know, at the time, that it was "Aunt Lou."

She was born in Fredonia, Ky., Nov. 14, 1832 and grew to womanhood in that place.

She was the daughter of Benjamin and Sarah E. Rice.

Her marriage to G. W. Johnson occured in Fredonia, Oct. 31, 1851, and soon after the family moved to Mt. Vernon, where they have since resided. Her husband answered the call Jan. 5, 1899.

For several weeks Mrs. Johnson has been quite feeble, having never fully recovered from a stroke of paralysis she suffered 11 years ago. About Christmas time she had a severe attack of heart trouble and she never recovered from the effects of it.

She was the mother of ten children, and seven of this family survive her. They are Harry Johnson of Carmi, Mrs. J. H. Coberly of Belle Rive, Thomas, Florence, Sallie, Emma and Lucy, of this city.

The funeral services will be held at the First M. E. church, Thursday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev.G. E. McCammon. The burial will be held at the West Salem cemetery. The body will lie in state at the residence, 825 Main St., from 8 until 10 o'clock Thursday morning.
