Rev. John Henry Hurt

The Rev. John Henry Hurt, 71, of 601 North St. died at 9:05 a.m. Wednesday at his home.

A retired employee of the stove foundry, the Rev. Hurt was a pastor in the Mt. Vernon area for many years.

He was born in Gibson County, Ind., on Sept. 13, 1908, the son of Claud and Rosila (Garrett) Hurt.

On Aug. 23, 1929, in Petersburg, Ind., he married Mae P. Crabtree, who survives.

An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the American Legion Post No. 141 at Mt. Vernon. He was a member of the Second Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hughey Funeral Home with the Rev. Elmer Harris, the Rev. Glendall Davis and the Rev. Rolla Eller officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 141.

Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Allen R. of Ashley; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Albert Hurt of Tallahassee, Fla.; and three sisters, Edith Robinson and Mary Staley, both of Owensville, Ind., and Ruth Spindler of Fort Branch, Ind.

He was preceded in death by one son, Ronald; one daughter, Roberta Mae Fisher; one sister and his parents.
