John R. Hughey Sr.

John R. Hughey Sr., 83, of Mt. Vernon went to be with the Lord 5:08 p.m. Oct. 6, 2004, at the home of his daughter, Gladys. He was surrounded by all of those who loved him.

He first worked at the Mt. Vernon Car Shops and later was owner/operator of Hughey Tree Service.

Mr. Hughey was born April 15, 1921, in Bonnie to Thomas Newton and Grace Ellen (McKee) Hughey.

He married Doris Jean (Brown) Hughey Aug. 14, 1948, in Morganfield, Ky.; she died Nov. 1, 1984.

Per the request of Mr. Hughey, his body will be cremated and no public services will be held. Interment will be in Hopewell Cemetery. No public visitation will be held.

Mr. Hughey is survived by sons Tom R. Hughey and wife Denielle of Mt. Vernon, Billy Hughey and wife Kathy of Mt. Vernon and Frank L. Hughey and wife Faith of Belle Rive; daughters Brenda Richardson and husband David of Opdyke, Gloria Shirrell and husband Gary of Mt. Vernon, Gladys Hughey and husband Roger Fuller of Mt. Vernon and Tresa Willis and husband Thurman of Mt. Vernon; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Lou Dixon and husband Stan of Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by a special friend, Betty Jo Clark of Mt. Vernon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; an infant daughter, Janet Marie Hughey; two sons, John R. Hughey Jr. and James Dean Hughey; three brothers, Cecil, Harrison and Faye Hughey; and three sisters, Alma, Gladys and Pauline.

Mr. Hughey served in the Army for seven years during World War II. He was a member of the Baptist faith and was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1376.
