Knox Hirons

Knox Hirons, 83, of Waltonville died 10:40 p.m. Aug. 25, 2004, at Mt. Vernon Care Center in Mt. Vernon. He was a lifetime farmer.

Mr. Hirons was born Sept. 9, 1920, in Jefferson County to McConnell and Ruth (Knox) Hirons.

He married Dorothy (Wells) Hirons July 29, 1951, in Mt. Vernon; she died March 17, 2001.

Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Clifford Hicks will officiate. Military flag presentation will be conducted. Those attending this service are asked to go directly to the cemetery on Saturday. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Hirons is survived by a son, Charles K. Hirons of Waltonville; a daughter, Nancy Hirons of Grand Bay, Ala.; and a sister, Marlene Hart of Grand Bay, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and two sisters, Alene Hirons and Geraldine Ray Hirons.

Mr. Hirons was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9153 of Waltonville, AMVETS Post 148 of Waltonville and was a master mason for 50 years with Grand Lodge AF & AM 918 in Sesser.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to Knob Prairie Cemetery and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
