George Earl “Tater” Hill

George Earl “Tater” Hill, 84, Mt. Vernon, died at 6:35 a.m. July 26, 2007, at White Oak Rehabilitation Center in Mt. Vernon.

He was born Aug. 18, 1922, in Woodlawn, the son of Earl and Viona Hill.

He married Ellen Lucille Patton in 1962 in West Frankfort; she died Nov. 2, 2000.

He worked in grocery wholesales.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mount Catherine Cemetery in Jefferson County with Randy Sells officiating.

George is survived by a stepdaughter-in-law, Mary Lynn Yates of Mt. Vernon; two grandsons, Jamie Yates and wife Joni of Springfield, and Patrick Yates of Mt. Vernon and fiancée Michelle Smith of Wayne City; four great grandchildren, Emily Rae, Mary Beth Catherine, Jonathon, and Ellen Marie Yates, all of Springfield.

His parents, wife and one step son, Jim Yates, preceded him in death.

George served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II as a pilot. He was a life long member of the Moose, Elks Club, and a Life Master Bridge Players Association member and was of the Protestant faith.
