Charles Wesley Herron

CHARLES WESLEY HERRON Washburn, Illinois March 11, 1940

Charles Wesley Herron was born at Mt. Vernon, Illinois, April 30, 1870, the second (actually third) of a family of six, to Wesley Clark and Malinda E. Burge Herron.

He was married March 20, 1890 to Martha Jane Wilkey, of Dahlgren, Ill.

To them were born ten children, seven of whom, with the wife and mother, survive, as follows; William, Morley, Mrs. Luella Arends, Walter, Ransom, Harley and Raymond, all of Washburn except Mrs. Arends of El Paso, Illinois and Raymond, of Geneseo, Illinois.

Two daughters passed away in early childhood, Viola at six and Nannie May in infancy.

The second son, Charles Homer, laid down his life in France in his country's service on the day the Armistice was declared, Nov. 11, 1918.

There are also twelve grandchildren, belonging in almost equal numbers to the seven children of Mr. Herron. Also three sisters of Mr. Herron, who survive him, are Mrs. James B. (Luella) Jarrell, of Mt. Vernon, Illinois, and Mrs. W. B. (Nancy)Williams and Miss Olive Herron, both of Oviedo, Florida. (Also preceding him in death were his parents, and two brothers, Jason B., and Morley B.)

In December, 1914 the Herron family removed from Mt. Vernon, Ill. to what was known as the Goodel farm east of Washburn; and they continued to reside in the vicinity of Washburn till the spring of 1928, when they removed to the residence in Washburn, where Mr. Herron passed away Monday March 11, 1940, lacking only about seven weeks of his seventieth birthday and only nine days of his and Mrs. Herron's fiftieth wedding anniversary.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist Church, Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with Rev. Charles Fritzhenry, pastor, officiating. Mrs. James Colborn and Miss Roberta Jacobs sang, "Asleep in Jesus" and "Some Day We'll Understand." Interment was in Linn-Mt. Vernon Cemetery with Messrs. John Hollis, Charles Safford, N. L. Peabody, Benj.Shafer, Raymond Schwartz and L. P. Hockenbury acting as pallbearers.
