Gertie Hays Of Mt. Vernon Died At Age 89

Gertie Hays, 89, Route 1, died at 5:15 p.m. Nov. 27, 1986, in her home.

Mrs. Hays was born Sept. 15, 1897, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Norman and Mary Ellen (Fred) Newell.

On May 6, 1925, in Vandalia, she married Neal Hays, who died Jan. 21, 1972.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow in South Hickory Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Survivors include a grandson, Steven Hays and his wife Anita of Mt. Vernon; a great-granddaughter, Stephanie Hays; a daughter-in-law, Betty Hays of Mt. Vernon; and an aunt, Myrtle Freeman of Waltonville.

Mrs. Hays attended South Hickory Hill Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a son, Fred Hays.
