Lepton Harpole

The Rev. Lepton F. HARPOLE, well known Mt. Vernon minister, died at 4:30 p.m. yesterday at Jefferson Hospital about three hours after suffering a heart attack. The Rev. Mr. Harpole, who resided in Dodds township, was 53 years, 8 months and 23 days of age.

He was stricken near the Talbutt Inmplement Co., on the Waltonville Rd., yesterday afternoon and an emergency call was made to the rural fire department. Fire Chief Carl JONES responded with an inhalator and upon arrival found that the stricken man was his stepfather. Chief Jones was able to revive Mr. Harpole and he was taken to the hospital, where he died a few hours later.

At the time of his death the Rev. Mr. Harpole was serving two churches as minister- the Arnold View church at Creal Springs and the Liberty church at Johnston City. He was ordained to the ministry in 1931. For 17 years he was pastor at Blue Point church near Johnsville and for 14 years was minister at the Hazel Dell church at Sesser. During his ministry, he also pastored a number of other churches in southern Illinois. He was a member of the Bakersville Baptist church.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Myers Chapel. The Rev. Riley BURTON will officiate, and burial will be in Bethel Memorial cemetery.

The Rev. Mr. Harpole was born July 31, 1893 in Mt. Vernon, the son of George F. and Luella (BRYAN) Harpole. He was a lifetime citizen of this community.

On September 27, 1911 he was married to Henrietta Jones, who survives.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Norma J. LITTLE and Mrs. Mary Mae MARQUIS of Mt. Vernon; a stepson, Carl Jones of Mt. Vernon; two sisters, Mrs. Myrtel BECHTEL and Mrs. Helen MORGAN of Mt. Vernon; a brother, the Rev. Marsh Harpole of Mt. Vernon; four grandchildren and one great grandchild.
