Mabel E. (Elliston) Harmon

Mabel E. Harmon, 95, of Mt. Vernon died at 8:12 a.m. Feb. 20, 2003, at St.Mary's/Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

Prior to her retirement, shw was employed as a presser in the finishing department of Mode-O-Day Dress factory in Mt. Vernon, and also for Hass and Leiber Grocery St. Louis.

Mrs. Harmon was born Aug. 1, 1907, in Mt. Vernon to Alva M. Elliston and Hattie (Hamlin) Elliston.

She married Walter M. Harmon Aug. 2, 1924, in St. Louis, he died June 15, 1942.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Logan Street Baptist Church. The Rev. Everett Lemay will officiate. Burial will be at Boyd Cemetery in Jefferson County.Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home.

Mrs. Harmon is survived by daughter-in-law, Doris Harmon of Mt. Vernon; grandaughter, Delores Howard of Sand Springs, Okla., great-grandchildren, Jim Howard and wife Beth, and Jeff Howard and wife Stephany, all of Sand Springs, Okla.; great-great-grandchildren Nichoal Howard, Nathan Howard, Aleecia Howard, Ashlee Howard: a sister, Velma Mooney and husband Raymond of Dix; a brother, Walter Elliston of McLeansboro; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a member of Logan Street Baptist Church and the Bible Learners Sunday School Class.

Mrs. Harmon was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Norman "Jim" Harmon; four sisters, Nora Holtmann, Ida Wegmann, Ora Piercy and Eula Brookman; and five brothers.

For those who wish memorials may be made to Logan Street Baptist Church and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. box 721, Mt. Vernon, Illinois 62864.
