Lawrence Elmer Gowler

L. E. Gowler, 71, Ex-Tax Assessor Of Township, Dies

Lawrence Elmer Gowler, a retired farmer and former Mt. Vernon township tax assessor, died at 5:30 a.m. today at his home on RFD 7.

Mr. Gowler's death occurred two days after he had observed his 71st birthday.

Mr. Gowler was a well known lifetime resident of Jefferson county.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Camp Ground Baptist church and burial will be in East Salem cemetery.

The body will remain at Myers Chapel, where friends may calla fter 7:00 p.m. Thursday. At noon Saturday the body will be removed to the church, to lie in statae until the funeral hour.

Mr. Gowler was born June 21, 1883 in Jefferson county, the son of Henry M. and Margaret (McConnaughhay) Gowler.

He was married to Cora Ellen Keele, who preceded him in death June 27, 1949.

Mr. Gowler was a member of the Camp Ground Baptist church and served as a deacon of the church.

He is survived by one son, Roy L. Gowler of Mt. Vernon; two daughters, MRs. Evelo Weatherford of Mt. Vernon and Mrs. Myrtle Greer of Mt. Carmel; one sister, Mrs. Grace Edminson of LaGrange, Ill.; a half-brother, Gleason Gowler of Mt. Vernon; 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A daughter, Lucille Atkins, preceded him in death.
