William Adolph "Toots" Gilbert

William A. "Toots" Gilbert, 94, Mt. Vernon, died 11:30 p.m. Thursday, August 18, 2005, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

He was born Nov. 20, 1910, in Mt. Vernon, a son of William Lawrence and Lena (Mabus) Gilbert.

He married Alice Lucille Cluck on Nov. 1, 1930, in Mt. Vernon; she preceeded him in death on Aug. 1, 1998.

Mr. Gilbert was employed as a plumber for 42 years at E.F. Wielt & Co. of Mt. Vernon.

The funeral will be held 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Calvary United Pentecostal Church in Mt. Vernon. The Rev. Steven Edwards will officiate. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Gilbert is survived by three daughters, Alice Nadine Jenkins of Mt. Vernon, Madlyn Dueene Shields and husband Ivan of Rockford and Patricia Catheline Gibbs and husband Gary of Opdyke; a son, William Paul Gilbert and wife Joyce of Effingham; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; a foster son, Frank Duncan of Oklahoma; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Gilbert was preceeded in death by his parents; a son, Robert E. "Rocky" Gilbert; two grandchildren; one great-grand-daughter; and four brothers, Lawrence, Walter, Ira and Earl Gilbert.

Mr. Gilbert was a member of Calvary United Pentecostal Church in Mt. Vernon and the Plumber & Pipefitters Union Local 551 of West Frankfort.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to Calvary United Pentecostal Church and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, Ill., 62864.
