Cyrus Gilbert

Death of Cyrus Gilbert:

(Cemetery outside of Waltonville is named Cyrus Gilbert. This is where many Newells are buried)

Another old pioneer has passed to that undiscovered country. Cyrus GILBERT died of apoplexy at his home in Waltonville at 3 o’clock this morning.

He was born in Washington county, Ohio, in 1823, son of Eli Gilbert who settled in the southwest part of this county in 1839 and brought with him from Ohio the lumber with which to erect his residence. Cyrus came with his father and has since resided in this county.

In early manhood he was married to Eliza J. McClendon, who has been dead for some years.

Of a number of children born to them, one son and three daughters survive; Stephen, residing in Oklahoma; Mrs. Henry Forman of Waltonville, Mrs. Chas. Brown of near Bluford, and Mrs. Will Maddox of St. Louis. he also leaves two brothers and a sister: M. R. of this city, Alvin of Waltonville, and Mrs. Lois Isom of Grove Springs, Mo.

Five or six years ago, he married Mrs. Ben Hirons, who still survives.

Mr. Gilbert, as are all of his name, was always recked amoung the county’s best citizens. He was a man in whom his neighbors had implicit confidence and was frequently honored by them in places of trust. He was acting as Justice of the Peace at the time of his death. He was for many years an influential member of the Universalist Church and politically was an unswerving Republican.

The funeral will probably occur Saturday, but the exact time has not been determined.

(Year -- 1902)
