Rites Friday for Respected Citizen
Who Came To Illinois in Covered Wagon
Mrs. Lydia H. Garrison, widow of James Wiley Garrison, died at 2:10 p.m.
Tuesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Earl Adams, 517 S. Eighteenth Street.
Her age was 91 years, four months and 15 days.
Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. M. A. Guthrie, will be held Friday
at 2 p.m. at Myers Chapel and burial will follow in West Salem Cemetery .
The Body will lie in state at Myers Chapel, where her many friends may call.
Mrs. Garrison, one of the oldest and best loved women of Jefferson County, was
born August 8, 1850 in Athens County, Ohio, the daughter of Cyrus Hughes and
Louisa Dye Hughes. When she was a young girl she came to Illinois in a covered
wagon with her parents. The family settled about four miles west of Ewing in
Franklin County. On September 4, 1875 she was united in marriage with James Wiley
Garrison and they moved to Dodds township, where they resided until the family
moved to Mt. Vernon in September, 1909. Mr. Garrison died on October 29, 1912.
Mrs. Garrison, a member of the First Methodist Church, led an exemplary life and
numbered her friends by her acquaintances. She was the mother of 10 children,
two of whom preceded her in death. Surviving are four sons, Cyrus, Joe and Ruis
of Mt. Vernon and Clarence of Evansville, IN; four daughters; Mrs. Claus Stonemtz
of Opdyke, Mrs. Ben Roeder and Mrs. Earl Adams of Mt. Vernon and Mrs. Harry Combs
of Alton; two sister, Mrs. Joanna Clark of Champaign and Mrs. Julia Irving of Mt. Vernon;
15 grandchildren and eight great - grandchildren.
