Leo G. Franklin

Leo G. Franklin, 76, of Mt. Vernon died 3:50 p.m. Nov. 29, 2004, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

He was retired from the Marion Federal Prison, where he had worked as a correctional officer.

Mr. Franklin was born Sept. 1, 1928, in Mt. Vernon to Frank J. and Mary Anna Barbara (Rockenmeyer) Franklin.

He married Wilma (Lemay) Franklin June 6, 1952, in Mt. Vernon; she survives.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Hopewell Cemetery in rural Jefferson County. The Rev. Everett Lemay will officiate. Those attending this service are asked to go directly to the cemetery on Thursday. Military flag presentation will be conducted by the chaplain of American Legion Post 141 in Mt. Vernon. Per the request of Mr. Franklin, no public visitation will be held.

Mr. Franklin is survived by his wife, Wilma J. Franklin of Mt. Vernon; grandchildren Stacy Wahlquist and husband Kent of Mt. Vernon and Jason Irwin of Mt. Vernon; a brother, Leonard N. Franklin and wife Monica of Birch Run, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Larry Franklin; a daughter, Debbie Franklin; and two brothers, Frank Franklin and Marion Franklin.

Mr. Franklin was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and American Legion Post 141.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Hughey Funeral Home, where you may call 242-3348 for obituary information at any time.
