Fred B. Fleener Sr.

Fred B. Fleener Sr., 79, of Mt. Vernon died 9:25 p.m. Aug. 14, 2005, at his residence in Mt. Vernon.

He was employed in the maintenance department for the city of Mt. Vernon and later worked for Precision Engineering, also in Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Fleener was born Oct. 30, 1925, in Mt. Vernon to William Ray Fleener and Connie (Webb) Fleener Shores.

He married Mildred Lucille "Shorty" (Douglas) Fleener Sept. 6, 1946; she preceded him in death Aug. 2, 2002.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. The Rev. Larry Jones will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Mt. Vernon, with full military honors conducted by the members of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Fleener is survived by two daughters, Rita Heck and husband Larry of Mt. Vernon and Theresa Karch and husband Robert of Bluford; two sons, Fred B. Fleener Jr. and wife Margaret of West Virginia and J.K. Fleener and wife Sarah of Johnston City; a sister, Helen Henley of Whiteland, Ind.; a sister-in-law, Annie Fleener of Indianapolis, Ind.; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, Ronald Eugene Fleener; a grandchild; three great-grandchildren; two brothers; and a sister.

Mr. Fleener served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of Mt. Vernon American legion Post 141 and the Mt. Vernon Church of God.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to St. Mary's Good Samaritan Hospice and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
