John W. Estes

OLD PIONEER GONE - John W. Estes, of Opdyke, Falls Asleep

John W. ESTES, who died at his home in Opdyke yesterday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock, was one of the old pioneers of this county, being 78 years of age. He was born in Moore's Prairie Township.

For a number of years he has been in feeble health, being afflicted with rheumatism. He was in the general merchandise business in Lynchburg for several years, selling out about twenty-five years ago.

He was a member of Opdyke M. E. Church, and Jefferson Lodge No. 368, A.F. and A.M. He was made a Mason in 1867, when the lodge was at Lynchburg.

His wife was Miss Caroline IRVIN, who died about eight years ago.

The children now living are: W. H., Runyon and Delbert ESTES of Opdyke; J. W. ESTES of Ashley and Mrs. Jesse B. JONES of this city.

He was one of the most worthy and respected citizens of this county. The funeral services will be conducted at the M. E. Church, in Opdyke, by the pastor, Rev. W. DEWHIRST. The Masonic Lodge will then take charge of the remains, which will be laid to rest according to Masonic ritual in Opdyke Cemetery.
