John Ellis
John Ellis Passed Away at His Home in Evansville

John Ellis, aged 86, passed away at his home in Evansville , Indiana 
on Oct. 13, his death being due to paralysis and the decay of years.

Mr. Ellis was born in Ohio in 1820, and came to Mt. Vernon in 1858.  
He was then in the ministry preaching the doctrine of the Methodist 
Episcopal church. For many years he had appointments in and about 
Mt. Vernon, in addition to working at the saddlers trade and clerking 
in stores. Mr. Ellis was one of the pioneer preachers of the county, 
the type of his ministry dating back to early manhood.

In later years during the time the L.&N. shops were located here, he 
was upholsterer for the company, and when the shops moved to Howell he 
also went, retaining his old position which he held until about two years 
ago being compelled at the time to give up his work on account of failing health.

Mr. Ellis was married six times, four wives have gone before. His last wife 
was Fannie Lowry who with three children of their union survives him. Four 
other children Ed, of Louisiana, Mo., Al of Sturgis, Ky., Mrs. Nannie Witham, 
of California and Mrs. Myra Collins, of Arthur, Ill., are also living.

He was a devout Christian and a faithful adhered to the principles of Methodism.  
He was not a man to seek publicity, but went about on his quiet way doing good 
at all times.

Next to his church came the I.O.O.F. lodge.  He belonged to Marion Lodge of this city.

The body arrived here from Evansville, Monday morning and the funeral was held at 
the First M.E. church in the afternoon, followed by interment at Oakwood, which was 
in charge of the Odd Fellow.
